Coach Menschner enters his second season as the head coach of the Patriots and sixth overall after a 34-16 campaign his first season as head coach. Coach Menschner oversaw the pitching and recruiting aspects of the game during his first four years. His pitchers won 145 games during those four years and last year’s staff had an ERA of 4.05 with a record 430 strikeouts. Two members of the 2010 team were selected in the Major League Baseball draft, and the 2012 season expects to see more possible draftees.
Coach Menschner reigns from the cornhusker state, growing up in Omaha, Nebraska. After a shortened career due to injuries at Northwestern, he found himself wanting to coach. He served as an undergraduate volunteer for his alma mater before graduating with a degree in Physical Education and has earned his Master’s in Sports Management from American University. Coach Menschner also has several years experience coaching American Legion baseball both in Virginia and Nebraska and spent the 2009 and 2010 summers as an Assistant Coach with the Martinsville Mustangs of the Coastal Plain League.
Coach Menschner serves as Assistant Athletic Director for the Patriot Athletic Department, as well as the Great Expectations Mentoring Coordinator and an instructor in the Middle College program here at PHCC. Coach Cates begins his third season at Patrick Henry Community College after spending one season as an assistant coach at Greensboro College and six seasons with Region X foe Rockingham Community College where he served as head coach. Coach Cates works directly with Patriot hitters and has made a huge impact on PHCC’s program. In 2010 Patriot hitters set a school record for homeruns (30) and team batting average (.333). Spring 2011 saw the team batting average record broken (.334), a huge accomplishment for Coach Cates and the Patriots especially with the new BBCOR bat standards in place.
Coach Cates also helps with the offensive side of the game coaching third base when the Patriots hit, and works directly with catchers as well. Coach Menschner said of Cates: “Coach Cates has already had a huge positive impact on our program, he genuinely cares about our players, he’s a tireless worker, and is a big reason our program has been able to have the success we’ve had.” Coach Cates is a graduate of Guilford College and resides in Roxboro, NC with his wife Twyla.
ZACH MORRIS
Assistant Baseball Coach
Coach Morris joins the Patriot coaching staff for his first year, although he’s no stranger to Patrick Henry. After a standout high school career at Magna Vista, where he earned First Team All-Region honors, Morris was a pitcher for the Patriots in 2008 and 2009. After his time at PHCC, Morris moved on to Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration.
Coach Morris serves as the Patriots first base coach, in addition to helping with the Patriot pitching staff.“We are very excited to have Coach Morris back in the Patrick Henry program,” Head Coach Paul Menschner said, “he’s familiar with the way we want things done, and he’s going to be a great college coach.” Coach Morris resides in Axton, VA with his wife Autumn.
