Veronica Favero, who has helped coach cheerleading squads at Bassett High School since 2008, has been named the head cheer coach at Patrick Henry Community College.

After serving as the junior varsity basketball cheer coach at BHS in 2008, Favero took over as the head coach for the Bengals’ competition and varsity basketball cheer squads beginning in the 2009 school year.

“I’m excited to be at PHCC,” said Favero, who will continue to serve as Bassett’s head competition coach. “I’m excited for the challenge, to be able to do more things than I was able to do on the basketball sideline at the high school, just because it’s college its got fewer rules on stunting and dancing and things like that.”

Under Favero’s guidance, the BHS competition cheer team finished first in the Piedmont District in the 2009, ’10 and ’11 seasons. The streak came to an end last season, when Bassett finished second in the PD.

As a teenager, Favero was a varsity basketball and football cheerleader at Fieldale-Collinsville High School.

She plans to use her experience as a cheerleader and cheer coach as she guide’s the PHCC program.

“Cheering is a great way to be involved at the community college and to be able to continue cheering if you were a cheerleader in high school,” she said. “We’ll be able to support more than just the basketball teams. Hopefully, we can get involved with some community activities and a lot of the on-campus events here at PHCC. I want the cheerleaders to be seen at more than just the basketball games.”

Favero will hold open tryouts for the cheerleading team Sept. 4-5 in Collins Gymnasium, located in Stone Hall on PHCC’s campus. Potential cheerleaders will need to possess dedication and commitment to the program and be enthusiastic about the Patrick Henry athletic program, she said, though no prior cheer experience is required to try out. Favero is hoping to a field a 12-person cheer team this year. She is the wife of PHCC head women’s soccer coach Larry Wylie.
