Golfers come home 12th nationally

Patrick Henry Community College’s (PHCC) golf team has four semesters, a pair of Region X season titles in the fall 2014 and spring 2015, and a trip to the NJCAA Division II national championship under its belt.

According to coach Robert Weinerth, however, there is still some work to do.This week in Scottsboro, Alabama, at the national championship, Weinerth said the Patriots had their eyes opened by the level of competition from across the nation. Despite the daunting task of adjusting to the stage, PHCC managed to come home in 12th place as a team and had all five golfers finish in the top-100 individually.“It was certainly a learning process for all of us, especially me,” Weinerth said. “But, overall I think it is a phenominal thing we accomplished.”Weinerth said the team’s goals changed when they realized their best group score of the season, a 294 which was posted on the second day of competition, was 18 shots short of eventual champion Smith Mountain’s (Arizona) 276.Daniel Rudolfsson, in his first semester with the program, made the most of the trip to Alabama. The sweet-swinging Swede posted a two-under-par total over the four day tournament to lead the Patriots and earn himself second-team All-America honors. Weinerth pointed to Rudolfsson’s ability to limit three-putts — he posted only one three-putt in 72 holes — as key on Goose Pond Colony’s Lake Course.Weinerth said the 7,100-yard course presented challenges to the Patriots’ short and long-range games.“We should have played a few shots better, but the course wasn’t easy by any means,” Weinerth said. “It was long but the real challenge was that the greens were huge and had a lot of undulation.”Having faced the toughest opposition in the history of the program, Weinerth said he feels he will have to make some changes in his approach as he moves forward to compete for national titles. That starts with improving from within, he said.Although Weinerth loses Tyler Shough and Jake Drake to graduation, a good core of players including Rudolfsson, Lawrence Howliston and Damian Beasley remain heading into the fall season.Weinerth said he was proud of the program’s ability to grow to such heights in only a couple of years, and pointed to support from PHCC professors and administrators Dr. Angeline Godwin, Brian Henderson and Chris Parker along with Chatmoss Country Club.“There’s a lot of pieces to the puzzle and we wouldn’t be able to get to nationals this year or have the goal of cracking the top-10 next year without all of their support,” Weinerth said.PHCC RESULTSPatrick Henry (VA) CC Patriots- 303 294 300 307, 1204, +52, 12thRudolfsson, Daniel 71 74 72 69 286 -2 t-16thHowliston, Lawrence 79 73 79 76 307 +19 t-82ndBeasley, Damian 78 73 77 81 309 +21 t-90thDrake, Jake 76 74 80 81 311 +23 t-95thShough, Tyler 78 80 72 83 313 +25 t-99thNJCAA Division II National ChampionshipGoose Pond Colony – Lake Course, Scottsboro, ALPar 72, 7145 yards, Slope 129, Rating 73.1TEAM RESULTSRank Team Scores Total Par1 South Mountian (AZ) CC 277 276 288 281 1122 -302 Tyler (TX) JC 282 284 282 289 1137 -153 Miss Gulf Coast CC 283 277 300 292 1152 E4 Darton (GA) St Coll 281 288 297 293 1159 +75 Kansas City Kansas CC 287 287 296 299 1169 +176 Kirkwood (IA) CC 293 284 298 296 1171 +19t7 Grand Rapids CC 295 292 295 299 1181 +29t7 Illinois Central Coll 293 286 302 300 1181 +299 Owens CC 290 290 301 306 1187 +3510 Walters (TN) State CC 291 292 297 308 1188 +3611 Mineral (MO) Area 294 292 306 307 1199 +4712 Patrick Henry (VA) CC 303 294 300 307 1204 +5213 Black Hawk College 310 294 305 299 1208 +5614 Seminole (OK) State 290 296 316 307 1209 +5715 Lackawanna (PA) CC 296 305 322 304 1227 +75t16 Carl Sandburg Coll 303 307 324 318 1252 +100t16 Southeast (NE) CC 310 309 315 318 1252 +10018 Hagerstown (MD) CC 316 325 313 312 1266 +114
