2009-2010 Schedules Now Posted

The 2009-2010 school year is fast approaching and the new schedules for Men's and Women's Basketball along with the fall and spring schedule for baseball have been posted. Please visit each sport's respective pages for see the new schedules.

 

Patriots Close Out Season in Tournament

BURLINGTON, NC --- The Patrick Henry Patriots finished up their 2009 season with a fourth place finish at the Region X tournament in Burlington, NC. The Patriots dropped a second round game to #2 ranked L.B. Wallace C.C. on Thursday by a score of 9-1 to fall into the loser's bracket of the tournament. The Patriots rebounded to top Brunswick C.C. on Friday afternoon by a score of 5-2 before being knocked out of action by Wilkes C.C. on Friday night by a score of 12-11.

L.B. Wallace scored seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings and coasted to a 9-1 seven inning win over the Patriots. The Patriots only managed six hits while scoring in the seventh against the Saints. D.J. Turpin took the loss allowing six earned runs in four innings.

The Patriots got back to their winning ways on Friday afternoon knocking Brunswick from the tournament with a 5-2 win. Hunter Kenney led the nine hit attack for PHCC going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Corey Jones added two hits and scored a run in the win. Jeremy Sprague picked up his second win of the season working seven innings allowing just two hits and two runs while walking three and striking out five. Shane Flynn worked a scoreless eighth and Brandon Chocklette picked up save number 13 on the year working a scoreless ninth.

Friday night's game was a back-and-forth contest that eventually went the way of the Cougars from Wilkes C.C. by a score of 12-11. The Patriots carried an 11-9 lead into the bottom of the ninth but Wilkes rallied for three runs to advance to Saturday. Hunter Kenney once again was the leader on offense going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two doubles. Corey Jones added two hits and Jesse Morrison and Andrew Bradley had two RBIs each. Five pitchers worked on the mound for the Patriots with Chocklette taking the loss allowing three runs in the ninth with two of those being unearned.

The Patriots closed out their season with a #13 ranking in the latest NJCAA poll with a 40-17 record.

 

Patriots Top Lenoir at Region X Tourney

BURLINGTON, NC --- Corey Jones went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Jesse Reid worked 6 2/3 of scoreless relief as Patrick Henry topped Lenoir 8-5 in the first round of the Division II Region X tournament in Burlington, North Carolina. With the win the Patriots improved to 39-15 on the season and will face #2 seed L.B Wallace C.C. at 4:00 PM on Thursday afternoon.

Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth the Patriots rallied for three runs to take a 7-5 lead and added an insurance run in the eighth to claim the win. Brandon Chocklette picked up his 12th save of the season working a scoreless ninth inning. Reid, who relieved starter T.J. Brenneman after just 1 1/3 allowed just three hits while walking four and striking out three improving his record to 2-5 on the season.

Andrew Bradley joined Jones in getting three hits for the Patriots. Bradley also scored three runs and added an RBI in the win. Ethan Tanner added two hits while Hunter Kenney, Austin Delmotte, and Jesse Morrison had one each.

 

Patriots Take Two of Three from Wilkes

MARTINSVILLE, VA --- The PHCC baseball team closed out Region X play this weekend winning two out of three games with first place Wilkes Community College at Hooker Field. The Patriots and Cougars split a doubleheader on Saturday with Wilkes winning game one 13-9 with the Patriots winning game two 4-1. The Patriots picked up a 6-2 win on Sunday to win the series.

The Patriots banged out 11 hits in game one but couldn't overcome 15 hits and 13 runs by Wilkes. Andrew Bradley led the offense going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Thomas Sappelt, Austin Delmotte, and Chris Beazley each had two hits with one of Sappelt's hits being a two-run home run. The Patriots used six pitchers in the game with Kyle Via taking the loss, allowing two runs on one hit and two walks without retiring a batter.

T.J. Brenneman was the story of game two pitching a complete game allowing just one run and five hits while walking none and striking out five. The Patriots scored three runs in the first and one run in the second to take the early lead and rode the arm of Brenneman to the seven inning win. Ed Clark was 2-for-3 to pace the six hit attack for the Patriots.

The Patriots finished up the weekend on Sunday scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth to break a 2-2 tie to win 6-2 and improved to 9-7 in Region X play and 37-15 overall. Hunter Kenney was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, including a big two-run single in the eighth inning to lead the Patriots on offense. Ed Clark, Corey Jones, and Andrew Bradley each had two hits for PHCC. Jeremy Sprague got the mound start and worked 7 1/3 innings before giving way to D.J. Turpin. Sprague allowed two runs and four hits while walking six and striking out eight. Turpin got the win in relief working 2/3 of an inning. Brandon Chocklette worked a scoreless ninth inning to secure the win for PHCC.

 

PHCC Softball Sweeps New River

The Patrick Henry Community College Patriots softball team swept a double-header with New River Community College. The Patriots took Game 1 10-0, behind a two-hit shutout from pitcher Amber Holestin. Holestin struck out three and walked none. Carrie French led the offensive charge with a double, a run scored, and three RBI's. Kara Simpson added two runs and two RBI's for the Patriots.

Game 2 saw the Patriots pick up the win 11-1. Holestin helped her own cause with a run and two RBI's, while allowing just two hits and walking none. Holly Willard, Lauren Compton, and Taylor Clifton each added two hits for the Patriots. Lindsey Rogers and Kayla Jones each scored twice.

 

Patriots Drop Two of Three

KINSTON, NC --- The PHCC Baseball team dropped out of first place in Region X dropping two games in a three game series to Lenoir Community College in Kinston, NC over the weekend. The Patriots got the win in game one of the series but dropped the final to and fell to 7-3 in conference and 31-11 overall.

Game one took ten innings and a huge game for Thomas Sappelt for the Patriots to pick up the 16-14 win. Sappelt was 3-for-4 with a three run homerun in the first inning and a grand slam in the fifth inning. Sappelt finished with seven RBI and three runs scored. Ethan Tanner was 5-for-6 at the plate with two runs scored. Jeremy Sprague also added three hits for the Patriots. A number of pitchers worked on the mound for PHCC with Corey Jones being the eventual game winner working two scoreless innings allowing no hits while walking three and striking out two.

Errors plagued the Patriots in game two on Saturday as Lenoir picked up the 5-4 win scoring the winning run on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh while only scoring just one earned run on PHCC starter Austin Delmotte. Delmotte worked 6 1/3 innings allowing seven hits and just one earned run. Delmotte walked one and struck out six in the complete game effort. Ethan Tanner and Lance Kennedy each had two hits on the day for the Patriots. Tanner finished Saturday's doubleheader going 7-for-9.

Errors once again were the story of game three on Sunday as Patriot starter Jesse Reid allowed just four earned runs in an 11-3 loss. Lenoir scored four runs in the fourth and sixth innings to send the Patriots home with a losing weekend. Reid allowed 12 hits and walked two while striking out five to drop to 1-4 on the season. Austin Delmotte was 2-for-3 at the plate with a two run homerun and RBI single. Thomas Sappelt and Ethan Tanner added two hits each.

 

Kennedy Earns NJCAA Weekly Honor


Patriots catcher Lance Kennedy has been named the NJCAA Division II Player of the Week for the week ending on March 22. Kennedy (William Byrd; Roanoke, VA) had a .400 batting average to lead the first year member Patriots to a 4-1 record last week. In a 9-8 win over Southeastern C.C., Kennedy went 2-for-3 with two homeruns, including a grand slam, a walk, and 6 RBIs.

 

PHCC Athletes Earn Academic Honors

The PHCC Athletic Department is pleased to announce the following students were named to the Honor's List (Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher w/ 30 hours completed and enrolled in at least 12 or more credits) for the 2008 Fall Semester:

Bronwyn Hairston (Cheerleading), Adrienne Joyce (Cheerleading), Ryan Smith (Baseball), Cynthia Knott (Cheerleading), Allyn Ann Campbell (Cheerleading).

The following students were named to the Dean's List (GPA of 3.2 or higher and at least 12 credit hours) for the 2008 Fall Semester: Baseball - Brandon Chocklette, Perry Caudill, D.J. Turpin, Lucas Signor, Hunter Kenney, Tyler Tweedy, Jeff Alderman, Jeremy Sprague, Ethan Tanner, Bret Mitchell. Softball - Stephanie Skinner, Taylor Clifton, Kayla Jones. Cheerleading - Amanda Amos, Caroline Dionne.

Athletic Director Chris Parker is very proud of these student-athletes and their academic accomplishments.
