DENMARK, S.C. — Another slow start got the better of the Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) women’s basketball team Thursday as the Lady Pats fell to Region X, Division I Denmark Tech 87-62.

The Lady Pats struggled out of the gates and were forced to play from behind early, and were never able to find a way to catch up despite a 44-point second half. A 12-1 Denmark Tech run to open the game set an early tone by the home team as PHCC coach Brian Henderson said his team had too many missed layups and turnovers to open the game.

Patrick County High School product Ebony Reynolds continued her latest string of double-double performances, posting 10 points and a team-high 18 rebounds. Reynolds, though, did have her struggles from the field hitting just four of her 17 shot attempts. The G.W.-Danville High School tandem of Kedra Bradley and Lexi Dabney had solid outings, as Bradley scored a team-high 20 points with seven boards while Dabney added 13 points and six assists.

Ruth Omolola provided key minutes, as well, finishing with eight points and 11 rebounds.

“Once again our girls fought back but it’s starting the game off right which is the problem,” Henderson said. “We can fight, we will fight, but we have to be mentally tougher when the jump ball is tossed.”

Adding to the road troubles Thursday was PHCC’s poor effort at the free-throw line. The Patriots finished 9-for-21 at the line and were nearly doubled up in attempts at the charity stripe as Denmark Tech finished 29-of-40 at the line. Overall, Henderson said his team simply couldn’t match Denmark Tech’s aggressiveness early, leading to a 46-23 halftime deficit.

“Denmark Tech has a really strong team that pushes the pace on both ends. Tonight, we weren’t prepared to their aggressiveness,” Henderson said. “It was a very good non-conference test to help us prepare for the rest of our season.”

The loss dropped the Lady Pats to 4-7 overall, and will have off until Jan. 19 when it travels to Greensboro, N.C. to take on defending Region X, Division II champion Guilford Tech.
