Patriots Basketball Season Ends In Region X Tourney

March 4, 2018

MARTINSVILLE, VA — When the PHCC men’s basketball team is at its best, multiple Patriots get involved on the offensive end.

Five players averaged double figures this season led by sophomore guard Dequarious Harper’s 16.4 points per game.

This recipe for success was exactly how the Patriots gained the fifth seed heading into this weekend’s tough Region X men’s basketball tournament against Pitt Community College.

PHCC and Pitt split the regular season series, giving neither team an advantage heading into the game on Richard Bland College’s neutral court. However, the Patriots weren’t able to overcome foul trouble and fell to Pitt 99-92, ending their 2017-2018 season.

The 2017-18 campaign was a step forward for the Patriots despite Saturday’s sour ending. PHCC graduates five Patriots with just two returning sophomores — Franklin County Area grad Brenlee Reedy and Dequarious Harper. Both players were major contributors to PHCC, playing in every game for the past two seasons. Hafeez Anifowoshe, LeeMario Gils, and Benjamin Cross are the other Patriots that will be moving on.

“I think overall, it’s a great season for these guys in a lot of respects,” Coach Kenny Wade said. “Hopefully, we’ve kind of set a standard for what we expect from ourselves — not just from a win-loss standpoint, but just from a quality of play, commitment level, those type of things. Hopefully this kind of springboards us into the offseason with the group of freshman we have returning.”
