Three PHCC athletes earn NJCAA academic honors

Three Patrick Henry Community College Student-Athletes were named Academic Achievement award winners Tuesday by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Women’s soccer player Ashley Lazo was honored in the Superior Academic Achievement category for her 3.92 GPA. Lazo is from Danville and a Tunstall High School alum. She will graduate in December from PHCC with an associate’s degree in general studies. Lazo was a captain on the Lady Patriots’ inaugural women’s soccer team.

Baseball player Bill Steven was honored in the Superior Academic Achievement category for his 3.84 GPA. This was Steven’s second time receiving the award. A redshirt sophomore from Fonthill, Ontario, Canada, he graduated in December with an associate’s degree in business administration. Next season, he plans to play baseball and pursue his Bachelor’s degree at UVA-Wise.

Baseball player Zane Pitzer was honored in the Exemplary Academic Achievement category for his 3.67 GPA. Pitzer was a sophomore transfer student from Wallace State Community College. He is from Bellbrook, Ohio, and graduated in May with an associate’s degree in general studies from PHCC. He has accepted an offer to play baseball next season at Norfolk State University.
