For the first time in school history, Patrick Henry Community College
has won a title at a national tournament. Patriots wrestler Chauncey
Ross won the 215-pound weight class at the National Preseason
Wrestling Championships in Brodheadsville, Pa., on Saturday.
“The club is very proud of Chauncey’s national title,” Coach Stephen
Biedrycki said. “He is an excellent student-athlete that has trained
extremely hard for this event.”
This is the first win for the program, which is in its first season.
The event featured wrestlers from around the country.
Ross credited hard work in practice and good coaching for his success.
“I trained hard from the very first day of practice, and that made me
feel confident going into this tournament,” he said. “We have a great
coach, I trust the way he trains us. It paid off this weekend
(Saturday). I am hoping that my success will help the program grow.”
Biedrycki is confident that Ross’ victory is something the program can
build upon.
“As the program grows, we hope to have many more success stories such
as this one,” he said. He also hopes to the accomplishment will clear
the air regarding the validity of the program.
“If there was anyone doubting whether PHCC wrestling was serious about
competing at a national level, then Chauncey’s accomplishment should
put that doubt to rest,” Biedrycki said. Athletic Director Christopher
Parker added that “National Championships are hard to come by,” but he
hopes there will be “many more to follow.” |
