Fowlkes inks with PHCC WSOC

RINGGOLD — When checking out the Patrick Henry Community College women’s soccer program, Dan River’s Amy Fowlkes liked the unity that the Lady Patriots program showed. Fowlkes announced Wednesday she will play for Patrick Henry.

“It just seems like it would be a really good atmosphere,” Fowlkes, a senior forward with the Wildcats, said. “And, it seemed like the team really gets along with each other because they do all these activities.”

Fowlkes likes that the team hangs out together off the field and outside the classroom. She mentioned that her shy demeanor at first was a reason that she looked for a team with a lot of chemistry.

Fowlkes looks to play a part in building up the fairly new Patrick Henry program. The Patrick Henry program will be in its third season in fall 2014.

Dan River coach Jeff Keller thinks Fowlkes’ versatility on the field will help her at the college level.

“Amy’s the type of player you can put her anywhere on the field,” Keller said. “Goalkeeper, striker, she can play anywhere on the field. … She can help a less experienced player understand that position.”

Fowlkes also feels playing at Patrick Henry Community College will be a great step to help her prepare for playing higher-level college soccer.

“I’ve actually always kind of wanted to play at a college level,” she said. “And if I didn’t sign anywhere, I was going to try out for a team somewhere.”

Keller thinks Fowlkes’ soccer experience will help her and the Lady Patriots next year.

“I’ve known Amy since she was probably 9 years old — she played soccer for me [for a long time],” he said. “I’ve known [since she was] at an early age that that Amy has got the mental fortitude and the toughness to play college soccer.”
