Four Inducted into Athletics Hall of Fame

June 17, 2014

Denver Smith of the PHCC Motorsports program, Johnny Williamson of the Transportation Department, and College Administrators Wayne Cardwell and Christopher Parker were inducted into the Patrick Henry Community College Athletics Hall of Fame on Monday at the Annual Board Meeting.

Smith was instrumental in helping the PHCC Motorsports program begin.  He grew up racing different types of vehicles and this is where his love for the sport started.  Smith gained first hand experience on operating and fixing motor vehicles at an early age.  With him being apart of the Motorsports program, the students have a very reliable and knowledgeable instructor to learn from.

Williamson has been a loyal and respected member of the Athletic Department family for many years.  He handles a vast majority of the transportation duties for all of the sports here at PHCC, while also filling in every once in a while for other programs on campus when needed.

Cardwell, Budget and Facilities Manager for PHCC, has worked at the college since 1993.  He has been a constant presence at home and away games of all of the sports in the program.  Cardwell is very well known by the athletic department as a major supporter of the program ever since he first stepped foot on the campus.

Parker, PHCC’s Vice President of Institutional Advancement, joined the college in 2006 and has served as the Athletic Director overseeing all athletic programs at the college.  He was awarded Athletic Director of the Year in 2011 by the National Association of Collegiate Director of Athletics. He was also selected to be a part of the Leadership Academy of PHCC in 2009. Since 2012, Parker has been the Women’s Director of the Region X National Junior College Athletic Association.

When Parker first arrived at PHCC, the college had only two male sports: baseball and basketball. In addition, PHCC had just folded its women’s basketball team due to lack of participants. With the need to establish Title IX equality, women’s softball was started in the 2008-2009 season.  Now the PHCC athletic program houses a total of 7 NJCAA sports including Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, and Golf.

The inductees increases PHCC’s Hall of Fame membership to 29. Inductees are named once a year after being voted on by a panel of current and former college employees.
