Lady Pat’s Win Second Region X Regular Season Volleyball Championship

October 21, 2016

Martinsville, VA

After the competition ended Saturday afternoon, the Lady Pats had officially won the Region X Regular Season Championship for the second year in a row.  Coach Kelly Proffitt, her coaching staff, and her sophomore led team enter the post season tournament as the number one seed for the second consecutive year.

“This is exactly what we sought out to accomplish, winning the regular season,” Head Coach Kelly Proffitt said. “We have now put ourselves in a great position to fight for the tournament championship again. It’s really rewarding to see our sophomores, who are this program’s foundation, get this opportunity.”

Added sophomore Randi Robertson, Franklin County, VA: “We set this goal at camp, and we completed it. We worked together to get to it.”

PHCC (18-3,11-1 in Region X) grabbed the region’s No. 1 seed and gained a first round bye. They will play the winner between Rockingham Community College and Vance Granville in the semi-finals at 11 a.m. Saturday. Sandhills Community College plays host to this years Region X Volleyball tournament.

“This feels awesome,” said Sydney Garrett, sophomore from Lafayette, IN. “We fought to get here and never gave up when we were down. I’ve loved being a member of this team and look forward to competing for another championship.”

The Lady Pat’s suffered it’s first defeat ever in the Region X conference on Saturday.  Up to that final match against Sandhills, they had won 23 conference matches in a row.  Now they move on to defend their 2015 Region X Title.

“Sandhills gave us trouble with their defense,” fellow Franklin County resident and sophomore Mikayla Holland said. “We definitely needed a wake up call heading into the tournament. While it wasn’t the way we wanted to finish the season, we are looking forward to attempting to start a new win streak.”

Reigning Coach of the Year, Kelly Proffitt, knows that she hasn’t gotten here alone.  “Without the time and effort our assistants put in, this may not be a reality,” Proffitt says.  “Individually we are a drop, but together we are an ocean.”

Local sophomore Janika Hunt, Martinsville, leads the conference in hitting percentage and blocks per set. Hunt said her team is ready for this weekend: “We will just keep fighting, together, like we have been doing for these past two years.”
