Patriot Soccer Programs Look To Continue Good Start

September 9, 2014

imageThe Patrick Henry Community College soccer teams drew tough competition to begin their respective seasons, but both squads have made a good showing thus far.

The women’s team started off with a tremendous victory against USC-Lancaster where they used great teamwork to win 11-0.  They then experienced a few setbacks in competitions against Trinity Women’s College and Spartanburg Methodist before getting back on the the right path in a big way Sunday with a win against conference opponent Wake Tech Community College.

“I thought it was a good way start to the season,” Coach Larry Wylie said. “We stressed to the players it’s a marathon, not a sprint and we want to peak at playoff time and we knew that we were playing a tough schedule to begin the season. Spartanburg Methodist was a very tough opponent. We knew it would be a tough challenge and a teaching lesson for our players.”

Currently leading the Lady Pats is Larissa Ayo with 4 goals, Monica Diaz with 3 goals, and Tovin Saleh with 3 goals and 3 assists.  The Lady Pats next contest will be played on Saturday, September 13 on the road against USC-Salkehatchie.

The PHCC men are off to a very strong start in Coach Enda Crehan’s first season leading the Patriots.  With wins against USC-Lancaster, Richard Bland College, CCBC-Cantonsville, and Guilford College, the Patriots have started the season off undefeated with a huge challenge ahead on Wednesday, September 10 against the #4 ranked team in Division II NJCAA Men’s Soccer, Louisburg College.

“We are off to a good start but we are still a work in progress and hopefully we can prove to be a tough team to play against,” Crehan said.  “I hope people come out Wednesday night as we host Louisburg College in a tough contest.”

Leading the Patriots at the start of this season is Mauricio Moreno and Daniel Maldanado with 4 goals a piece, Sami Tiittanen with 5 goals, and Francisco Garcia with 3 goals and 4 assists.  PHCC goalie Sydnor Trent has also done a wonderful job anchoring the defense with 14 saves and 2 shutouts in 2 games.
