Patriots clipped by Richard Bland

April 24, 2016

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — The only thing the Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) softball team needed Saturday was a run.

Over the course of 14 innings, the Lady Patriots couldn’t find a way to scrape one across against visiting Richard Bland College. The Statesmen were held scoreless through a regulation seven innings in Game 1 before edging PHCC 1-0 in nine innings, and then used a seven-run, fourth inning to close out Game 2, 10-0 in a shortened five.

The Lady Patriots lost a pair of 3-2 games in the first meeting between the two teams Mar. 26.

Looking to snap a 10-game losing streak, the Lady Pats were in position to earn their first victory since Mar. 19. Freshman pitcher Kayla Hailey kept RBC in check, stranding runners in the first, fourth and fifth innings. She finished with nine strikeouts but a sacrifice bunt eventually scored the game’s only run.

The PHCC offense managed to get a runner on base in six of the nine innings of Game 1 but couldn’t come up with a timely hit. Its best chance came in the sixth inning when freshman Abby Williams hit a one-out double. She was stranded at third, however. The Patriots also left a pair of runners on base in the second inning.

In Game 2, Richard Bland opened up a 2-0 lead with a big fourth inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. Seven runs and seven hits all with two outs suddenly made it a 9-0 game. A fielding error allowed the game-changing inning to occur as all seven runs were unearned. The Statesmen used the extra life to pound out six straight hits.

Meanwhile, the PHCC was stymied in the second game and failed to produce much action on the bases over five innings. Williams provided a pair of hits to collect three on the day.

PHCC will close out the regular season Apr. 30 in a Sophomore Day doubleheader against Region X unbeaten Florence-Darlington at Martin Field starting at 2 p.m.
