April 10, 2016

DOBSON, N.C. — The Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) baseball team kept its perfect April going Sunday (Apr. 10) with a 7-0 win over Region X foe Surry Community College.

The Patriots (28-13) earned their second consecutive Region X, Division II series sweep after taking all three games the previous weekend at home against Catawba Valley Community College. It was the ninth straight win for PHCC, helping even its road record at 10-10.

Sophomore Anthony Zona (Mechanicsville, Va.) and freshman Parker Brann (Leasburg, N.C.) combined for the shutout win as Zona picked up his third victory of the season. He pitched six innings of three-hit ball, allowing one walk while striking out four. Brann earned his first save by tossing three scoreless innings of relief, with a walk and no hits. The pairing faced just three batters over the minimum.

The Patriots offense opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second inning before creating some separation with two runs in consecutive innings in the fourth and fifth. PHCC outscored Surry 26-3 in the three-game series.

Freshman Montae Bradshaw (Prince George, Va.) had another multi-hit game in the series to finish the three days going 5-for-11 and four RBI. He was one of four players to hit a double Sunday as four of the team’s nine hits went for extra bases. Freshman Cody Powers (Mechanicsville, Va.) added a pair of runs and drove in two, as well. Sophomore Jonah McReynolds (Martinsville, Va.) also scored twice in the win.

PHCC returns home Wednesday (Apr. 13) for a doubleheader against Region X, Division III Rockingham Community College. The twin bill concludes a five-game series with Rockingham as the Patriots have won the first three meetings, scoring a total of 44 runs. They will head to the road next weekend to take on Lenoir Community College in another three-game Region X series.
