Patriots Fall Prey to Panthers

The Ferrum College Panthers played host to the Patrick Henry Community College Patriots on a drizzly Thursday evening game. This makeup game was supposed to be played on Tuesday, but was cancelled because of the rain. Even two days later, the wet weather was a contributing factor to the overall play of the teams.

Much of both teams’ offense was provided by mistakes each other made. Pass balls, hit-by-pitches, throwing and fielding errors dominated most of the game. The ball was being thrown around Adams Field like a Frisbee, with no one able to get a good grip.

After two innings, there were no RBI from either side to show for a 2-1 Panther advantage. It wasn’t until the 3rd inning when the Patriots offense got their first lead. A Daymon Totherow standup triple to the right field corner revitalized the wet bats of PHCC, and Dillon Crowder drove him in to split the score at 2 apiece.

Playing only seven innings, the Pats held a 4-3 lead by the end of the 6th. The top portion of the 7th nearly mirrored the events that took place in the 3rd inning. Nicolas Keister, batting leadoff, reached first on a throwing error with the big bat of Totherow on deck. With the exact same swing, Totherow drilled another triple into the right field corner, bringing in Keister. Rashad Stewart brought Totherow home with a Sacrifice Fly, extending the Patriots lead by 3 with only a half inning to play.

When Mark Hendricks was called in to close the door on the game, the Panthers came out swinging. Hendricks gave up three straight hits. A single, double, and then finally an RBI single. After a fielding error, another run scored. The Patriots held a 6-5 lead with one out and two runners left on base at 2nd and 3rd. With the right-handed Hendricks against the left handed batter not being favorable, PH decided to intentionally walk the batter to load the bases. A routine play turned bad when the second intentional walk pitch was not far enough outside, and the batter smacked the ball to the gap in left center field for a 2 RBI, walk off double. Ferrum won the battle of the blunders 7-6.

Hoping to regain their footing, the Patriots take to the road with a weekend series against Brunswick Community College. Check phccsports.com and the Patrick Henry C.C. Athletics Facebook page for more details of these events.
