PHCC Athletics Assists Give Hope

January 23, 2018

A community in Africa needed a basketball, Patrick Henry Community College’s Athletic Department decided to give a little more.

Earlier this week, Give Hope, a non-profit that aims to sustain communities globally through donations and support, reached out to PHCC’s Athletics Department. The organization asked the college to donate a basketball to a community center in Chalize, a village in Tanzania, Africa. A team from Give Hope is heading to Chalize to build a community center that will house three schools, a medical clinic, a community support center, gardens, and recreational areas. They call it the Center of Hope, and it would not be complete without a basketball for the kids to play with.

Eager to help support the mission of building community through education and athletics – which is at the heart of the PHCC Patriots’ own mission – PHCC Athletics donated several basketballs along with sports equipment, shirts, and book bags for the center’s youth.

“PHCC Athletics is committed to give back as much as possible, for as long as possible, ” says PHCC Athletic Director Brian Henderson.  “When Give Hope requested these items, we were excited to give. The Center of Hope they are building will be an amazing gift for Chalize, and PHCC is happy to be a part of it.”
