April 19, 2015

Everything came to a head Saturday for Patrick Henry Community College’s (PHCC) golf team at the region tournament in New Bern, N.C.

The Patriots defeated Surry Community College by 16 strokes to claim the NJCAA Region X Division II title. PHCC finished with a four-player total 608 for the 36-hold tournament at Emerald Golf Club. Since starting the program in the fall of 2013, it was the first golf championship for the school, advancing to the national tournament in the process.“I don’t think it has really hit the guys yet,” PHCC golf coach Robert Weinerth said. “It’s very special what we just did, and I think they were a little down because of their scores Saturday. I know it hit me immediately. Every practice since teeing up in the fall, our focus has been reaching the final destination of the journey, which is the national tournament.”The national tournament will be held May 19-22 at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course in Scottsboro, Ala.PHCC opened the two-day regional tournament with a 299 as Daniel Rudolfsson fired a 72. Tyler Shough and Damian Beasley followed with a pair of 75s. Rudolfsson’s score was the low round of day one which helped establish a 15-stroke lead.Surry’s Chandler White shot a 71 Saturday for the tournament’s overall low round. The Patriots nipped the defending region champs by a stroke over the final 18 holes.“The first day was really important and we had a good lead. Again, anything can happen and had a rough start (Saturday) but held it together,” Weinerth said. “I’m proud for this school and to be the first team from Patrick Henry to make nationals.”
