PHCC men win top Region X soccer awards

November 10, 2014

Patrick Henry Community College forward Daniel Maldonado was named Region X player of the year Saturday, and coach Enda Crehan was named region coach of the year in an awards ceremony that favored the Patriots.

Maldonado, a sophomore, led the team with 19 goals on the season and has nine assists. He helped lead the Patriots into the Region X playoffs before losing Thursday to seventh-ranked Eastern Florida.

Crehan led the Patriots to a 15-5 record and a No. 17 ranking this season, marking the first time PHCC has been nationally ranked.

Crehan said the awards were evidence that what PHCC is doing is working.

“It showed people took notice of us,” he said. “People recognize the hard work the players did.”

Crehan said the Patriots will not rest on their laurels, however.

“It’s always nice to get people to recognize what you do,” he said. “My guys want more, I want more. We’re gonna be back at it and training, and before Christmas break, we’ll be back at it and training and in the gym.”

Defender Stenson Croome also was named first-team all Region x. Connor O’Dwyer (eight goals, six assists) and Sami Tiitanen (13 goals, 10 assists), were second-team all-Region X selections, and Mauricio Moreno (nine goals, eight assists) was an honorable mention pick.
