PHCC Names New Softball Coach

June 10, 2014

Patrick Henry Community College has named Kari Whitney as the third head coach of the college’s softball program.

Former head coach Amanda Warley recently stepped down as her position of leading the Patriots for another coaching job. When the athletic administration found out about this change, Whitney was their first choice, according to Senior Athletic Administrator Christopher Parker.

Whitney, a Roanoke native, has served as the assistant softball coach at Roanoke College, the assistant softball coach at Radford University as well as the head coach at Radford. She managed a number of summer softball camps for the City of Roanoke, and brings a world of expertise about college softball to the PHCC Athletic Department, Parker said.

“Kari brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to PHCC,” Parker said. “We currently have several coaches with Division I coaching experience, but she will be the first with experience as a head coach at the Division I level.”

Whitney is a member of the Roanoke College Athletic Hall of Fame where she played on the inaugural Roanoke College softball team. She also was the first ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) player of the year at Roanoke College, and she was named as the Virginia SID (sports information directors) player of the year.

Additionally, she was and named to the NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) All-South Regional Team while earning NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division III All-American honors. While at Roanoke College, she led the Maroons to their first-ever NCAA Division III World Series appearance.

“I’m very thankful for this opportunity, and I’m extremely excited to lead the future of the Patriot Softball Team,” said Whitney.

Parker added, “We look forward to Kari continuing the excellence of this program and leading these student-athletes to success in their academic and athletic careers.”

Whitney also serves as the EMS paramedic program director at PHCC, a position she started this spring.
