PHCC Softball crowned Region X champions

May 5, 2014

The Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) Patriots softball team rode strong pitching, solid defense and timely hitting to a perfect 4-0 record Friday and Saturday to win the Region X Tournament championship in Burlington, N.C.

The Patriots now advance to the NJCAA District P Championships on May 10-11 in Tennessee.

Saturday’s championship game featured a rematch with Florence-Darlington, who the Patriots beat 5-1 Friday and then 5-3 in the championship.

PHCC got on the board with one run in the first inning on a Mary Skillman RBI-single. The Stingers came right back with three runs of their own in their half, led by a two-run home run from Bailey Jacobs.

The Patriots’ pitching and defense took over again, keeping the Stingers scoreless through the final six innings, as Sam Barton picked up her third win of the tournament with a complete-game, six-hit, five-strikeout effort. PHCC tied the game in the fourth on a Revels two-run single and then took the lead in the sixth as a passed ball scored Tessa Bunting. It then tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Barton was named Tournament MVP. She pitched 21 innings and struck out 14. She also added six hits, three runs and an RBI offensively.

Also named to the all-tournament team were Haley Faulkner (one win, seven innings pitched, one earned run, three K’s), Morgan Revels (four hits, four RBIs, three runs, a stolen base), Lindsey Packard (.500 on-base percentage, run) and Skillman (six hits, five RBIs, three runs).10176108_760560897308865_6932861213046113813_n

PHCC first-year head coach Amanda Warley said her team was mentally tough heading into the tournament.

“The ladies put it all together this weekend because they were mentally prepared and mentally strong,” Warley said. “I was never expecting to win something like this, all I wanted to do was make them the best players they could be.”

The Patriots entered the tournament as the #4 seed and faced the fifth seeded Southeastern Rams Friday morning.  A three run second inning put the Patriots up early on the way to a decisive 9-4 victory to open the tournament.  Mary Skillman had two doubles, three RBI’s and a run scored in the victory while Morgan Revels added a two-run double.  Sam Barton picked up the win, going the entire way in the circle, scattering seven hits and striking out four.

The Patriots next faced the overall tournament #1 seed and #18 nationally ranked Richard Bland Community College.  Barton was spectacular in the circle, leading the Patriots to a 2-1 victory.  Barton allowed just four hits and one unearned run, while striking out five.  Two runs in the top of the second inning was all the offense the Patriots needed, led by Kelsey Meadows RBI single.

The Patriots advanced to play Florence-Darlington Technical College in Friday’s final game.  Trailing 1-0 after five innings, the Patriot offense pushed across three runs in the sixth and two more in the final frame for a 5-1 victory over the Stingers.  Haley Faulkner picked up the win, tossing a complete game, allowing just six hits and striking out three.  Sam Barton had three hits and a RBI for the Patriots.  Mary Skillman, Allison Pentony and Kelsey Meadows added a RBI each.
