PHCC golf takes fourth at N.C. tournament

The men’s golf team of Patrick Henry Community College shot 317-318 – 635 to finish fourth in a tournament hosted by Johnston County Community College on Monday and Tuesday at The Neuse Golf Club (par 72; 7,011 yards) in Clayton, N.C.

Patriots competing in the tournament were Dustin Roberts (74-83 – 157; 11th), Zach Naqvi (80-78 – 158; 14th), Tyler Shough (83-79 – 162), Noah Harris (84-78 – 162) and Young Suh (83-79 – 162). The top four individual scores from each day were used to calculate a team’s composite score.

Sandhills Community College won the event, firing 285-299 – 584. N.C. Wesleyan (295-303 – 598) took second, followed by Surry Community College (306-306 – 612). Johnston CC, Louisburg and Central Carolina also competed in the tournament.

“It was a great experience for our golfers to see how talented some of these teams are,” said PHCC head coach Robert Weinerth. “We’ve got some very skilled players on our team, but there are talented kids on every college golf team. We’re gonna keep working at it and getting better. I’m looking forward to watching our team’s growth over the coming months.”

In its first tournament of the season on Sept. 13-14, PHCC took second at Silo Run Golf Club in Boonville, N.C. The Patriots (299-312 – 611) were led by Roberts in that event, as well. The Roanoke native shot 71-76 – 147 to place third among all individuals.

Surry Community College (297-293 – 590) won the Boonville tournament.

PHCC’s next event is the Louisburg Championship on Oct. 20 at South Granville Country Club in Creedmor, N.C.
