PHCC volleyball opens home schedule Labor Day weekend

July 31, 2017

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — The Patrick Henry Community College women’s volleyball team opens its 2017 season Aug. 26 at the Surry Community College tournament in Dobson, N.C.

The Patriots will play a pair of games, starting at 11 a.m. against Pfeiffer University. They conclude at 3 p.m. against host Surry, which handed the Patriots just one of four losses last season.

PHCC hosts its own tournament a week later as part of a three-team Labor Day weekend event, Sept. 2, welcoming Frederick Community College and Walters St. Community College to Stone Hall. The Patriots take on Walters St. at noon, followed by Frederick at 4 p.m. It will mark a tournament-filled start to the 2017 schedule for the defending Region X, Division III champs.

Coming off a 20-win season in 2016, the Patriots begin their regular season title defense at home with their Dig Pink Game on Sept. 9., against Central Carolina at 11 a.m. A home match with Pitt Community College the night before caps a challenging first three weeks of the season. Pitt handed PHCC its first loss last year after starting the season 11-0.

The much anticipated rematch with Sandhills Community College is set for Sept. 23. Sandhills dropped a five-setter to the Patriots on its home court in the Region X title match last October. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. as the teams split a pair in Martinsville last season — the only conference loss for Patriots.

The six-game October portion of the schedule features three of the final five conference games at home. A trip to Walters St. on Oct. 14 concludes a two-game season series with the Senators. The regular season finale is Oct. 16 at home against Davidson Community College at 7 p.m.
