DePriest’s Grand Slam Lifts Patriots Past Wake Technical Community College, 7–6

MARTINSVILLE, VA -- The Patrick & Henry Community College Patriots closed out the weekend with a statement 7–6 victory over Region 10 Division II opponent Wake Tech on Sunday afternoon at Hooker Field, improving to 9-6 overall and 7-2 in Region 10 DII West play.

Redshirt freshman Hunter DePriest (Alleghany, VA) delivered the defining performance of the afternoon, driving in five runs on two hits. He connected on a grand slam to left field in the fourth inning and added an RBI single in the third, accounting for five of the Patriots' seven runs.

P&H struck first in the bottom of the first inning when sophomore Brady Davenport (Little Mountain, SC) singled to bring home the game's opening run. Wake Tech answered in the second to tie the contest at 1–1, but the Patriots reclaimed the lead in the third as DePriest's RBI single made it 2–1.

The Patriots broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring five runs on two hits. Sophomore Bryson Redmond (Bluefield, WV) doubled to drive in a run before DePriest launched his grand slam to give P&H a commanding 7–1 advantage.

Wake Tech mounted a late rally, scoring five runs in the top of the eighth inning to cut the deficit to one. Timely singles, a hit-by-pitch, and a groundout fueled the surge, but the Patriots held firm down the stretch to secure the win.

DePriest also earned the victory on the mound, tossing six strong innings while allowing seven hits and just one run. The right-hander struck out four and walked one. Redshirt freshman Braedy Peck (Ashburn, VA) provided key relief, throwing two shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out three without issuing a walk.

Offensively, the Patriots totaled nine hits, led by Redmond's 3-for-4 effort at the top of the lineup. Defensively, P&H was sharp, turning three double plays and committing no errors. Davenport anchored the defense with 10 chances in the field.

Wake Tech finished with 12 hits on the afternoon but was unable to complete the comeback.

The Patriots will return to action March 7–8 as they travel to Hickory, N.C. for a three-game conference series against Catawba Valley Community College.
