Softball Opens JUCO Showdown Against Nationally Ranked Competition

PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL — Patrick & Henry Community College opened play Thursday at the Visit Panama City Beach JUCO Showdown, facing nationally ranked Chattanooga State Community College in a doubleheader to begin the multi-day event. P&HCC fell by scores of 8–0 in both contests.

In the opener, Chattanooga State took advantage of an early five-run first inning on its way to an 8–0 victory. Sophomore Lily Carola (P/1B, Union, WV) made the start in the circle for P&HCC and worked four innings, striking out four batters while allowing five runs, only two of which were earned.

At the plate, P&HCC was led by sophomore Hannah Haynes (1B, Virginia Beach, VA), sophomore Laura Brown (OF, Verona, VA), and sophomore Morgan McCrary (OF, Bassett, VA), who each recorded a hit. The Lady Patriots also showed aggressiveness on the base paths, finishing the game with three stolen bases.

The second game again presented an early challenge, as P&HCC dropped the nightcap 8–0. Sophomore Aris Smith (P/CIF, King George, VA) got the start and struck out six batters over four and one-third innings.

Freshman Brooklynn Hicks (INF, Covington, VA), sophomore Lily Carola, and freshman Kayli Alvarado (INF, Harrisonburg, VA) each collected a hit for P&HCC in the second game.

Head coach Robbi Campbell acknowledged the challenges of limited preparation while remaining confident in his group, saying, "With the weather not allowing us to practice consistently over the last couple of weeks, I was proud of how our team came out and competed today against a very strong No. 12 Division I Chattanooga State team. Lily Carola, Aris Smith, and Trinity Custer all saw time in the circle and had strong moments. Defensively, we made some key errors in crucial situations, but the more time we get on the field, the more those kinks will work themselves out. I'm very confident in this team and our ability to win this season."

P&HCC will continue play in the Visit Panama City Beach JUCO Showdown on Friday, facing Wallace State Community College-Hanceville at 10:30 a.m., followed by a matchup with Northwest Florida State College at 3:30 p.m., as competition continues in Panama City Beach.
