Softball Continues Tough Early-Season Stretch with Doubleheader at Roane State

HARRIMAN, TN – With soggy weather in the forecast, the Patrick & Henry Community College Lady Patriots softball team moved its weekend action up to Thursday, February 12, to take on strong NJCAA Division I opponents on the road in Tennessee. Despite competitive efforts, the Patriots dropped both games of the doubleheader as part of their challenging early-season nonconference slate.

Game 1: Roane State 8, P&HCC 0

Roane State pulled away with a six-run second inning to secure an 8-0 win in five innings. The decisive second frame, highlighted by four hits and a Patriot error, created separation that P&HCC was unable to recover from.

Sophomore pitcher Lily Carola (Union, WV) took the circle for P&HCC, giving up eight runs (one earned) on nine hits over three innings while striking out four and walking one. Offensively, Trinity Aherron (Fr., Danville, VA) and Morgan McCrary (So., Bassett, VA) collected the Patriots' two hits on the afternoon, and P&HCC turned a double play in the field.

Game 2: Roane State 11, P&HCC 3

The Patriots jumped out with an early 3-0 lead in Game 2. Freshman Kayli Alvarado (Harrisonburg, VA) opened the scoring with an RBI single, and Kylie Cooper (So., Wirtz, VA) followed with a run-scoring ground ball. Sierra Custer (Fr., Grottoes, VA) extended the lead in the second with another RBI knock.

Roane State answered in the bottom of the fourth with an eight-run inning that flipped the game and gave the Raiders control. The home team added a couple more runs as they went on to an 11-3 victory.

Sophomore Aris Smith (King George, VA) took the start for P&HCC, allowing six runs on seven hits over three and two-thirds innings with four strikeouts and one walk. In the nightcap's offense, Allison Brooks (Fr.), Brooklynn Hicks (Fr., Covington, VA), Sierra Custer (Fr., Grottoes, VA), Kayli Alvarado (Fr., Harrisonburg, VA) and Morgan McCrary (So., Bassett, VA) each recorded hits for the Lady Pats.
