Softball Drops Doubleheader at Volunteer State
GALLATIN, TN -- The Patrick & Henry Community College softball team fell in both games of Friday's doubleheader against NJCAA Division I opponent Volunteer State Community College, dropping Game 1 by a score of 6-0 and Game 2, 9-1.
Game 1 – Volunteer State 6, P&HCC 0
P&HCC held Volunteer State scoreless through three innings before the host team broke through in the fourth with a triple to take a 1-0 lead. A five-run fifth inning created separation, as Volunteer State capitalized on timely hitting and patience at the plate to secure the 6-0 win.
Sophomore Aris Smith (King George, VA) got the start in the circle for the Patriots and turned in a strong outing through five and one-third innings. Smith allowed four hits and one run while striking out six. P&HCC's defense turned a double play in the contest.
Volunteer State's pitcher limited the Patriots' offense, keeping P&HCC off the board despite competitive at-bats throughout the lineup.
Game 2 – Volunteer State 9, P&HCC 1
Volunteer State struck early in the nightcap, taking advantage of a first-inning error to build an early cushion. Another five-run fifth inning proved decisive, as the Patriots battled but were unable to overcome the deficit.
Sophomore Lily Carola (Union, WV) started in the circle for P&HCC, surrendering nine runs, just one earned, over four and two-thirds innings. Defensively, the Patriots were forced to navigate pressure situations as Volunteer State capitalized on extra opportunities.
Offensively, sophomore Hannah Frink (Vinton, VA) led P&HCC at the plate in the doubleheader, collecting a hit in Game 2. The Patriots continued to compete through the final inning despite facing one of the region's stronger NJCAA Division I programs.
P&HCC will be back in action on Tuesday, February 17, traveling to Richard Bland College for a doubleheader before finally opening at home on Wednesday, February 18. The Patriots will host Region 10 Division II opponent Southwest Virginia Community College in a doubleheader scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
The Lady Pats continue to navigate a challenging early-season schedule as they prepare for Region 10 play and look forward to competing in front of the home crowd next week.
