Patriots Open JUCO Jamboree with Dominant Doubleheader Sweep

MARTINSVILLE, VA — Patrick & Henry Community College opened Day One of the JUCO Jamboree in impressive fashion Friday, sweeping CCBC Catonsville in a home doubleheader at Martin Field. Due to poor field conditions at the original jamboree site in Hickory, N.C., CCBC traveled to Martinsville to ensure the games could be played. The remainder of the weekend schedule will now return to Stanford Park in Hickory on Saturday.

"We're appreciative of everyone working together to adjust the sites and schedules because of the field conditions at Stanford Park," said Head Coach Robbi Campbell. "Our goal was to make sure our student-athletes still had the opportunity to compete today, and I'm proud that both programs were flexible and committed to getting these games in. It says a lot about the cooperation within this event."

On the field, the Patriots delivered a complete team performance.

The Patriots powered their way to a 9-0 victory in the opener and followed with a 10-1 win in the nightcap, combining explosive innings at the plate with dominant pitching performances.

Sophomore first baseman Hannah Haynes (Virginia Beach, Va.) set the tone early in Game One with a solo home run to center field in the first inning. P&HCC continued to build momentum, adding a sacrifice fly from sophomore outfielder Morgan McCrary (Bassett, Va.) in the second and capitalizing on a defensive miscue along with a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Kylie Cooper (Wirtz, Va.) in the third.

The Patriots broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning. Freshman infielder Trinity Aherron (Danville, Va.) delivered a sacrifice fly, freshman Allison Brooks (Stuarts Draft, Va.) doubled home a run, sophomore infielder Hannah Frink (Vinton, Va.) added an RBI single, Haynes collected her second RBI hit of the contest, and sophomore pitcher/first baseman Lily Carola (Union, W.Va.) capped the inning with a run-scoring single.

Carola was equally sharp in the circle, tossing five shutout innings while allowing just three hits and striking out nine. Defensively, the Patriots were flawless, committing no errors, with sophomore catcher/utility player Haley Goode (Moneta, Va.) leading the way with nine defensive chances. Haynes and Brooks each recorded two hits, and the Patriots added three stolen bases to complete the opener.

In Game Two, CCBC struck first in the opening frame, but P&HCC responded immediately with a five-run bottom of the first to seize control. Freshman catcher/utility player Sierra Custer (Grottoes, Va.) delivered the biggest swing with a two-run triple. Haynes followed with an RBI single, and the Patriots capitalized on another CCBC error to extend the lead.

The offense continued to apply pressure over the next two innings. Haynes singled home a run in the second, Brooks added an RBI groundout in the third, and Aherron, Haynes, and Custer each finished the game with two RBI. Haynes, Custer, and Cooper tallied two hits apiece, while freshman infielder Kayli Alvarado (Harrisonburg, Va.) drew two walks as P&HCC showed patience at the plate.

Sophomore right-hander Aris Smith (King George, Va.) earned the win in the circle, allowing one run on five hits over five innings while striking out seven and walking none.

Across both contests, the Patriots showcased balance throughout the lineup, disciplined at-bats, aggressive baserunning, clean defense, and dominant pitching — a complete team effort to open the jamboree weekend.

P&HCC now shifts back to Stanford Park in Hickory, N.C. on Saturday as the JUCO Jamboree continues, including a scheduled matchup with College of Southern Maryland.
