Patriots Sweep Suffolk CC in Home Doubleheader at Martin Field

MARTINSVILLE, VA — Patrick & Henry Community College softball returned home Saturday and delivered an exciting doubleheader sweep of Suffolk County Community College at Martin Field, taking a dramatic 5-3 walk-off victory in Game One before rolling to an 11-1 win in the nightcap.

The opener was a tightly contested battle that required extra innings before the Patriots secured the win.

Sophomore Lily Carola (Union, W.Va.) was dominant in the circle, striking out 15 batters while allowing six hits and three runs over eight innings of work. Carola also turned in a rare highlight early in the game, throwing an immaculate inning in the second by striking out the side on nine pitches.

Suffolk took the first lead in the fourth inning before the Patriots answered in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore Morgan McCrary (Bassett, Va.) launched a solo home run to left field to tie the game.

The Sharks briefly regained the lead in the eighth inning, but the Patriots responded immediately in the bottom half. Carola singled to bring home the tying run before freshman Allison Brooks (Stuarts Draft, Va.) delivered the decisive swing — a two-run walk-off home run to left field to seal the 5-3 victory.

McCrary finished 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Patriots in hits, while Brooks drove in two runs. Defensively, P&HCC played a clean game without committing an error, with sophomore Haley Goode (Moneta, Va.) recording 15 defensive chances.

The Patriots carried that momentum into Game Two and quickly seized control of the contest.

P&HCC opened the scoring in the first inning when sophomore Hannah Haynes (Virginia Beach, Va.) singled to drive in a run. The Patriots then broke the game open with an explosive eight-run second inning. Freshman Sierra Custer (Grottoes, Va.) delivered a two-run double during the rally while the Patriots capitalized on several Suffolk defensive miscues to extend the lead.

Custer, freshman McKenzie Cobb (Yanceyville, N.C.), and freshman Trinity Aherron (Danville, Va.) sparked the offense from the bottom of the lineup, combining for four of the team's eight hits while scoring two runs and driving in four.

Custer led the Patriots with three RBI and went 2-for-2 at the plate, while both she and Haynes collected two hits. The Patriots also stayed aggressive on the bases, swiping four stolen bases, including two from Brooks.

Sophomore Aris Smith (King George, Va.) earned the win in the circle, striking out seven while allowing just three hits across three scoreless innings. Custer added relief work to help secure the 11-1 victory.

Head Coach Robbi Campbell praised the team's energy and ability to execute in key moments.

"We showed a lot of resilience today," Campbell said. "Game one was a battle and it took everyone staying locked in until the final inning. To come back and then carry that momentum into the second game with great pitching and timely hitting shows the kind of team we're becoming."

The Patriots will return to action next weekend when they host Wake Technical Community College in a doubleheader at Martin Field on Saturday, March 21, with first pitches scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
