Patriots Sweep USC-Salkehatchie Behind Strong Pitching and Balanced Offense

ALLENDALE, S.C. — Patrick & Henry Community College softball picked up a pair of wins on Wednesday, sweeping USC Salkehatchie 8-4 and 4-0 in a non-conference doubleheader.

With the sweep, the Patriots continued to build momentum late in the season behind strong pitching performances and consistent production throughout the lineup.

P&HCC responded early in Game One after falling behind in the opening inning. Sophomore Hannah Haynes (Virginia Beach, Va.) delivered a key double in the third inning to tie the game at three before the Patriots took control in the fifth. Freshman McKenzie Cobb (Yanceyville, N.C.) singled to drive in a run, followed by an error that brought in another, and sophomore Kylie Cooper (Wirtz, Va.) added an RBI double to push the Patriots in front.

The Patriots finished with 11 hits in the opener, with Haynes leading the way with two RBI while collecting two hits. Sophomore Hannah Frink (Vinton, Va.), Haynes, and Cobb each recorded multi-hit games, while P&HCC applied pressure on the bases with four stolen bases.

Sophomore Lily Carola (Union, W.Va.) earned the win in the circle, going the distance and allowing just one earned run while striking out six and walking none.

P&HCC carried that momentum into Game Two, where sophomore Aris Smith (King George, Va.) delivered a dominant performance in the circle. Smith tossed a complete-game shutout, limiting USC Salkehatchie to just one hit while keeping the Patriots in control throughout the 4-0 victory.

The Patriots broke through in the third inning, taking advantage of a wild pitch to score the game's first run before adding insurance runs later in the game.

Offensively, P&HCC totaled 12 hits, with freshman Brooklynn Hicks (Covington, Va.) and Cobb leading the way with three hits each. Haynes, sophomore Laura Brown (Verona, Va.), and sophomore Morgan McCrary (Bassett, Va.) each drove in a run, while the Patriots also turned a double play and played error-free defense.

Head Coach Robbi Campbell praised the team's all-around effort.

"We got strong performances in the circle and stayed consistent offensively throughout both games," Campbell said. "It's good to see us putting together complete games and continuing to improve as we head into an important stretch."

The Patriots will return home on Saturday, April 18 to host Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute in a key Region 10 doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. at Martin Field. Caldwell enters the matchup 6-0 in Region 10 Division III play and in first place, while P&HCC currently sits in second place in the standings. Prior to the games, P&HCC will honor its sophomore class, celebrating their leadership, dedication, and contributions to the program over the past two seasons.
