Sophomores Shine as Patriots Advance at NJCAA Division III Softball World Series
EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Patrick & Henry Community College softball continued its strong postseason run Wednesday afternoon, shutting out Joliet Junior College 8-0 behind a dominant outing from sophomore pitcher Lily Carola and a big day from the Patriots' sophomore class at the NJCAA Division III Softball World Series.
Carola was outstanding in the circle for the Patriots, striking out 12 batters while allowing just two hits across seven shutout innings. The right-hander worked around four walks and controlled the pace of the game from start to finish.
The Patriots broke through offensively in the fifth inning when sophomore Hannah Haynes ripped a three-run double to put P&HCC firmly in front.
Sophomore Laura Brown led the offensive attack with three hits, including a double, while driving in three runs. Fellow sophomore Hannah Frink also recorded three hits in the victory as the veteran core powered the Patriots throughout the afternoon.
Freshman McKenzie Cobb added two hits, while sophomore Morgan McCrary reached base multiple times and drew two walks as P&HCC totaled 13 hits as a team.
Head Coach Robbi Campbell credited the leadership and experience of the sophomore group following the win.
"Our sophomores really stepped up today," Campbell said. "They've been through a lot together and you could see that experience show up in a big moment. Lily set the tone in the circle, and offensively our older players did a great job leading the way."
With the win, the Patriots advance in the NJCAA Division III Softball World Series bracket and will face familiar Region 10 opponent Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute tonight at 8:00 p.m. The two programs have already battled multiple times this season, including during the Region 10 Division III Tournament.
