Turner named 2nd team; regionals start Friday

May 8, 2013

Jason Turner releaseStarting pitcher Jason Turner was named second-team all-Region X earlier this week, an award that came just days before Patrick Henry Community College’s postseason began.

Fifth-seeded PHCC (32-17 overall)will face No. 4 Southeastern (28-18 overall) at 4 p.m. Friday in the first round of Region 10, Division II baseball tournament. This double-elimination tournament will begin Friday and conclude Monday or Tuesday. All games will take place at O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium in Morehead City, N.C.

Turner (8-2 overall), finished the regular season with a 1.65 ERA, 86 strikeouts and just 19 walks allowed.

“Turner has been our ace all year, and the leader of our pitching staff,” said PHCC head baseball coach Paul Menschner. “He is extremely competitive, and the guy our team wants on the mound in a must win game. Hopefully he can be huge for us in the tournament, along with the rest of our staff. In order to win a tournament like this you need depth in your pitching staff. If we have some guys step up, make plays, and our hitters swing it the way they can, I think we have a good chance.”

With a victory over Southeastern, PHCC would play Saturday evening against the winner of No. 1 Catawba Valley/No. 8 Surry County. However, if PHCC drops its opener to Southeastern, the Patriots would face a series of win-or-go-home games beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.
