Volleyball earns first win of the season to open Region X play

September 9, 2017

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — The Patrick Henry Community College volleyball team earned its first win of the season Saturday (Sept. 9) with a 3-0 sweep of Central Carolina Community College at Stone Hall. The match also served as the Region X opener for the Patriots.

PHCC won by scores of 25-22, 25-14 and 25-22. The night before, the Lady Pats closed out their early non conference schedule with a 3-1 (17-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-25) defeat at home to Region X Division II Pitt Community College. For the first time in the program’s history it did not record a win over the first two weeks of the season and first-year coach Tim Collins said the strength of opponents early on played a big part in that.

“We purposely scheduled tough Division II teams at the beginning of the season to get us ready for a hard regional schedule,” Collins said. “It feels great to get that first win and I knew the first few weeks were going to be tough. I was hoping to get a couple of wins but the other teams did exactly what I thought they would and gave us great matches.”

Just over 12 hours removed from falling to Pitt, the Patriots came back strong and were able to hold off CCCC in the first set. The momentum carried over for an 11-point win in set two before PHCC fought off another late charge to win in straight sets. More than anything, Collins said the team’s movement was much better than the game prior.

“The passing was incredible (today),” Collins said. We played great defense, and when the girls needed to, they put the ball down. Central Carolina is a great team and they kept trying to get us out of our game and slow things down, but we managed to keep the same kind of fast paced offense we practice. We still have some kinks to work out but we look ready as we begin a long week next week,” Collins added.

PHCC will travel to Davidson Community College on Sept. 11 and Rockingham Community College on Sept. 13 before closing a busy week with a home tri-match with Vance Granville and Surry on Sept. 16, starting at 10 a.m.
