Patriots Sweep Region 10 Doubleheader in Shelby
SHELBY, N.C. — P&HCC Baseball secured two key Region 10 Division II conference victories Saturday, sweeping Cleveland Community College in a competitive road doubleheader.
The Patriots claimed an 8–7 win in Game 1 before edging the Yetis 7–6 in Game 2 to complete the sweep.
Game 1: P&HCC 8, Cleveland CC 7
P&HCC broke through in the third inning when sophomore Ryan Jones (Charlottesville, VA) delivered an RBI single and sophomore Brady Davenport (Little Mountain, SC) helped spark the offense. Freshman Josh Hall, Jr. (Lynchburg, VA) later added a two-run double as the Patriots built an early advantage.
Redshirt freshman Hunter DePriest (Alleghany, VA) led the Patriots with three RBIs. Sophomore Brennan Helms (Fort Mill, SC) and sophomore Austin MacAnanny (Mt. Pleasant, SC) applied pressure on the basepaths as P&HCC totaled three stolen bases.
On the mound, sophomore Carson Daniel (Thomasville, NC) earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) over 5.2 innings while striking out six.
Cleveland rallied late in the seventh, but the Patriots held on to secure the one-run victory.
Game 2: P&HCC 7, Cleveland CC 6
The nightcap proved just as competitive.
After Cleveland briefly took the lead, P&HCC responded with a four-run third inning. DePriest highlighted the frame with a two-run home run to left field. Sophomore Wyatt Griffith (Alleghany, VA) added an RBI groundout, and Helms followed with an RBI single to regain control.
Sophomore Toby Wilson (Asheville, NC) earned the win, striking out six across five innings of work.
Sophomore Bryson Redmond (Bluefield, WV) and Helms each recorded two hits in Game 2, while the Patriots played error-free defense and turned a double play to secure the sweep.
The Patriots delivered the sweep on Valentine's Day, giving P&HCC fans something extra to celebrate.
With the pair of wins, P&HCC gains early momentum in Region 10 Division II play.
The Patriots will finally open the home portion of their season next weekend at Hooker Field against Region 10 opponent Louisburg College.
Game 1 is set for Saturday at 1:00 p.m., followed by Game 2 at 4:00 p.m., with the series concluding Sunday at noon.
