Patriots Drop Saturday Doubleheader to Catawba Valley at Hooker Field
MARTINSVILLE, VA -- Patrick & Henry Community College baseball came up short in both ends of a Region 10 Division II West doubleheader Saturday against conference-leading Catawba Valley Community College at Hooker Field, falling 6-4 in Game 1 and 13-3 in Game 2.
In the opener, the Patriots battled throughout the afternoon in a tightly contested matchup before Catawba Valley used a late surge to secure the win. P&HCC struck first in the third inning when Hunter DePriest (RS-Fr., Alleghany, Va.) lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home the game's opening run.
After the Red Hawks answered in the fourth, both teams remained locked in a pitcher's duel behind strong starting efforts. Sophomore Toby Wilson (So., Asheville, N.C.) turned in another quality outing for the Patriots, allowing just two runs over 6.1 innings while striking out seven.
Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, the Patriots pulled even when Josh Hall Jr. (Fr., Lynchburg, Va.) drove in the tying run. Catawba Valley responded with four runs in the eighth inning, creating separation late. P&HCC continued to battle and plated two runs in the bottom half, but the comeback fell short.
Sophomore Evan Androvett (So., Dallas, Texas) paced the offense with a three-hit performance, while sophomore Ryan Jones (So., Charlottesville, Va.) drove in two runs. The Patriots also played error-free defense.
Game two remained competitive early before the Red Hawks broke things open with an 11-run fifth inning on the way to the sweep.
Catawba Valley grabbed an early lead on a solo home run in the second inning before the Patriots stayed within striking distance through four innings. Hall Jr. again provided offense for P&HCC, driving in two runs, while freshman Nolan Grabiec (Fr., Greenville, S.C.), Hall Jr., and DePriest each recorded hits.
DePriest got the start on the mound and struck out five over four innings of work before the decisive fifth inning tilted momentum in favor of the visitors.
The losses move Patrick & Henry to 17-19 overall and 15-15 in Region 10 play, while Catawba Valley strengthened its hold near the top of the conference standings.
The Patriots will look to bounce back Sunday when the two teams meet in the series finale at 12 p.m. at Hooker Field. The game will be streamed live on the Patrick & Henry CC Baseball Facebook page.
