Patriots Knock Off No. 15 Sandhills Community College in 94-91 Thriller at Home
MARTINSVILLE, VA -- Patrick & Henry Community College men's basketball delivered one of its biggest wins of the season Wednesday night, defeating nationally ranked No. 15 Sandhills Community College, 94-91, in a Region 10 conference showdown.
The Patriots led 51-46 at halftime and held off a late push from the Flyers to secure the three-point victory on their home floor.
Sophomore guard Jayse Barrett (Clayton, NC / Moravian Prep) led the way with 24 total points, knocking down five two-pointers, three shots from beyond the arc, and going 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Barrett came up with timely baskets and helped steady the Patriots down the stretch.
Freshman guard Ramael Warren Jr. (Brooklyn, NY / Greater Vision Academy) added 17 points, connecting on five two-pointers and one three-pointer while converting four free throws. Fellow freshman guard William Jones finished with 17 points as well, including a perfect 8-for-8 performance at the free throw line to help close out the game.
Sophomore guard Kendrale Kidd contributed six points on three made field goals, while freshman guard Braelyn Gray (Winston-Salem, NC / Carlisle Academy) tallied 12 points, hitting two three-pointers and going 4-for-4 at the stripe.
Freshman guard Wes Gobble (Charlottesville, VA / Albemarle HS) also scored 12 points, adding a three-pointer and a perfect 5-for-5 effort at the free throw line. Sophomore center Nolan Prince (Rappahannock, VA / Rappahannock County HS) chipped in six points inside to round out a balanced scoring effort.
Sandhills was led by Isaiah Upchurch with 24 points and Zack Noel with 27 points, but the Patriots' depth and poise at the free throw line proved to be the difference in the closing minutes.
Second-year head coach Dan Milloy praised his team's resilience and growth following the win.
"We needed this one," said Milloy. "Sandhills is an outstanding team and very well coached. I thought this was a complete team effort on our end. We're continuing to learn how to play with a lead and, more importantly, how to protect it. Once we consistently understand that, we'll put ourselves in position to make a strong postseason run. It's not going to be easy, but if we stay connected and play as a cohesive unit, we can be dangerous. I'm extremely proud of how our guys competed tonight."
With the win, the Patriots add a marquee conference victory over a nationally ranked opponent and continue to build momentum in Region 10 play.
P&HCC returns to action on Friday, February 13 at 6:00 p.m. when the Patriots host the Gators of Virginia Peninsula Community College in another NJCAA Region 10 Division III conference matchup.
