Baseball Battles Through Road Doubleheader at Gaston
GASTONIA, N.C. — Patrick & Henry Community College baseball opened its Friday doubleheader at Sims Legion Park against Gaston College, working through two challenging contests as the Patriots continue to navigate the early portion of the season.
Game One
The Patriots struck first in the opening game, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Wyatt Griffith, a redshirt sophomore infielder from Allegany, Va., crossed the plate on a passed ball to open the scoring. Evan Androvett, a sophomore catcher from Dallas, Texas, followed with a two-run single that drove in Brady Davenport, a sophomore catcher/infielder from Little Mountain, S.C., and Hunter DePriest, a redshirt freshman right-handed pitcher/outfielder from Alleghany, Va., giving P&HCC an early 3–0 lead.
Gaston College responded quickly and used timely hitting in the middle innings to take control of the game. Patrick & Henry continued to compete through each frame as they worked through the opener.
Game Two
In the second game of the day, Gaston built a large advantage in the second inning. Patrick & Henry was held scoreless through the early innings before breaking through in the fifth.
Brennan Helms, a sophomore infielder from Fort Mill, S.C., doubled to left field to drive in Josh Hall, Jr., a freshman infielder/right-handed pitcher from Lynchburg, Va., and Brady Davenport for the Patriots' first runs of the game. P&HCC added another run later in the inning when Austin MacAnanny, a sophomore outfielder from Mount Pleasant, S.C., stole second base, allowing Helms to score on the throw.
The Patriots continued to battle late in the contest as they closed out the doubleheader. First-year head coach Mason Gary acknowledged the challenge of the day, saying, "Today we didn't play to our standard. Credit to Gaston — they're a disciplined, well-coached group that capitalized on opportunities. We'll make the needed adjustments and move forward as we prepare for Roane State coming in next weekend for our home opener."
