Patriots Drop Heartbreaker in Pitcher’s Duel on Sophomore Day
MARTINSVILLE, VA -- Following an emotional pregame sophomore recognition ceremony honoring 17 Patriot Baseball sophomores before their final regular season home game, the Patrick & Henry Community College Patriots battled to the very end but came up just short in a 1-0 loss to Guilford Technical Community College Tuesday afternoon at Hooker Field.
The Patriots honored sophomores Toby Wilson, Dylan Howell, Brennan Helms, Landon Finley, Pierce Evans, Luke Haynes, Bryson Redmond, Preston Davis, Josh Dimpfel, Carson Daniel, Brady Davenport, Gabe Haught, Hunter DePriest, Austin MacAnanny, Brody Owens, Wyatt Griffith, and Evan Androvett for their dedication and contributions to the program over the past two years.
Despite outhitting the Titans 7-6, Patrick & Henry was unable to capitalize offensively in the tightly contested pitcher's duel.
Sophomore catcher Dylan Howell paced the Patriots at the plate with two hits, while Brennan Helms, Bryson Redmond, Hunter DePriest, Brady Davenport, and Josh Hall, Jr. each added a hit.
Both teams were dominant on the mound in a game that featured 13 combined strikeouts. The Patriots recorded eight strikeouts, while Guilford Tech pitchers sat down five.
The game's lone run came in the top of the third inning when Ashton Fernandez delivered an RBI single that proved to be the difference.
Sophomore right-hander Toby Wilson was exceptional in his final regular season home appearance, turning in a complete-game performance for the Patriots. Wilson tossed all nine innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out eight and issuing only one walk.
Guilford Tech starter Timothy Berry earned the win after throwing six shutout innings, allowing five hits while striking out three and walking two before turning the game over to the bullpen.
Andre Mason and Bryce Meacham each tallied two hits for the Titans, while Fernandez finished 1-for-4 with the game-winning RBI.
"Proud of the fight our guys showed today," said head coach Mason Gary. "Toby gave us everything he had on the mound, and we had opportunities at the plate but just couldn't come up with the timely hit. This group has battled all season long, and I'm proud of the way our sophomores have led this program."
Patrick & Henry concludes the regular season with a 20-22 overall record and an 18-18 mark in Region 10 play.
